Class Descriptions

Classes at Stone Turtle Yoga are open to everyone. Please be sure to also read about Yoga Etiquette at the bottom of the page.

Class Descriptions:

Hatha Yoga: Hatha Yoga is our foundational yoga class. Standing poses, seated poses, reclining poses, and breathing techniques are taught at a pace that is easy to follow, and poses will be held for sufficient time to allow students to feel a good, deep stretch. Hatha Yoga is ideal for beginners to seasoned practitioners, and aims to increase flexibility, improve balance, build strength, and enhance health and well-being for students of all abilities.

Hatha Flow:  Hatha Flow harmonizes the ancient technologies of yoga asana (postures) and breathing practices with gentle, conscious movement. Students will move their bodies in ways that are nourishing and regenerative, and also to take the time to refine certain postures which help increase the flow of life force energy. Designed to meet the goals of beginners to seasoned practitioners, this class aims to clarify and empower the body, and support physical, mental, and emotional resiliency. Join us!

Core Yoga:  Core Yoga is a slow-flow style yoga class that emphasizes strengthening and stabilization of the core muscles. This challenging yet accessible practice strengthens and empowers the body, mind, and spirit. Core Yoga teaches students to communicate with their bodies and access their physical and spiritual “core,” with the hopes of leaving them feeling strong, capable, and connected. All levels welcome.

Yoga for Mobility: When we talk about being “tight” and being “flexible”, what we’re really talking about is mobility. How mobile are you in your hips? Your spine? Your neck and shoulders? One of the greatest gifts yoga offers is increased mobility. With mobility, we can walk, sit, breath, and function with more vitality and ease. Healthy mobility allows us to enjoy life to a greater degree, because we are no longer as bogged down by feeling tight, restricted, stuck, or in pain. Yoga for Mobility focuses on functional movement to increase mobility in areas prone to tension: hips, shoulders, spine, legs, and feet. We will approach this practice with a sense of playfulness and curiosity, working areas of restriction from various angles to create more mobility and flow of life force. Through conscious breathing, we will get to know these stuck areas in the body, and use yoga asana to gradually release tension from within.

Rise & Shine: This all-levels flow class is designed to awaken, nourish, and rejuvenate the body, mind and spirit. Rise and Shine offers the same, full-body flow each week, and is taught by a team of rotating teachers. Students can enjoy tracking their progress and gaining mastery from week to week. Come on out and Rise & Shine with us!

Prana Flow (summer only): Awaken, purify, and reset your entire system at Prana Flow. This unique, mixed-modality yoga flow seeks to cultivate Prana (also known as Qi or Vital Life Force) within the body, using yoga postures, embodied movement, sound/music, directed focus for the mind, and breath work. These modalities come together to create a powerful experience that sheds stagnation and floods the body with aliveness and vitality. All levels welcome!

Yoga Etiquette:

Please arrive early to class. Leave enough time to sign in, pay if you need to, roll out your mat, and get ready for class. Late arrivals are disruptive to the class flow and are difficult to teach through.

Please check in at the front desk before class.

If you arrive late and the class has already started in silent meditation or is chanting, wait outside the class until the instructor has indicated that you may enter.

If you are new to the studio, please introduce yourself to the teacher. We are excited to meet you!

Do not leave during Savasana (Final Relaxation pose). This is disruptive to those who are still and silent. If you must leave early, please inform the teacher before class that you need to leave early, then make sure you allow enough time to put your belongings away and to be out the door before the start of the group Savasana.

Take the time to introduce yourself to other students. This supports your yoga practice and builds friendships and community. Take an interest in your fellow students.

New to Yoga?

Dress in comfortable clothing that will allow you full range of motion. Loose fitting shirts are prone to “riding up” during some yoga poses, so close fitting, stretchy clothing is helpful. Stone Turtle Yoga can offer specific suggestions on what to wear. Just ask!

Students are welcome to bring their own yoga mat, but mats are provided free of charge. Feel free to bring a water bottle and a towel into class, if desired.

I’d love to see a Yin Yoga class. I’ve done that at UpDog Yoga in Rochester, MI and it is awesome!

    1. Thanks for your feedback, Kathy!

I wonder if you would do something on one of the lakes…my family is visiting Higgins Lake this summer (we are Michigan natives that live in Florida), and I think it would be great to offer yoga on the beach (they do lots of that down here). What a great service to provide for vacationers looking for a sunrise/sunset yoga class to help them relax…a family friendly one might be especially marketable. Just a thought. Down here they have drop in classes outdoors and charge like $10.00 per drop in…or $20.00 for a family, etc..Be well:)

    1. Thanks, Yogamama! Aside from regular classes at the studio, there will likely be some lakeside sunrise or sunset classes. Stay tuned for when the class schedule gets posted later this month.

I would be willing to attend a 6 am sunrise class! I like the sound of lakeside yoga, too. Loved the “empower yoga” class yesterday!

What is the cost and how often for classes? I have never done yoga, but wanting to learn.

    1. Michelle, right now there are 7 classes per week in two locations. Since you’ve never done yoga before, I would suggest trying a Hatha Yoga class. You can view the class schedule and prices tabs on our website. Let me know if you have any other questions.
